Kreator (26)
Carnaval (23)

Another week has passed. And as preparation for a whole heap of interviews we've been listening to the first three bands. Meeting up with Al Barr last week when the Dropkick Murphys played Amsterdam. Talking to vocalist Stefan Kollee of the Dutch outfit The Naked Sweat Drips yesterday about their debut full-sized album Psycho Sister and speaking with Kreator on thursday. My Sleeping Karma released an amazing new live album called Mela Ananda, available soon via Napalm Records. And the incredible Miss Universe by Carnaval keeps spinning around here! She must be getting dizzy!

Heavy at work and working the heavy!

Death Alley – Live at Roadburn

Death Alley – Live at Roadburn
Suburban Records/Teepee Records – 2017
Rock, Psych, Stoner, Doom,
Rated: *****

This live album contains two things we love. Death Alley and Roadburn. A live recording from their impressive 2016 show on that infamous festival in Tilburg, Netherlands. Where they were joined by Ron van Herpen (Astrosoniq, ex-The Devil’s Blood, currently of ZooN) and Jevin de Groot (ex-Mühr) to deliver a moving and awesome performance. And those four tracks have now been saved for eternity. Having more ex members of The Devil’s Blood on stage ofcourse summoned the spirit of Selim Lemouchi. Which was punctuated by the It’s On track, penned by Lemouchi. And before I start stealing Walter’s words, let me just focus on the recording in hand and on ears. They jump right in with the It’s On track and have it breath life and room into this Death Alley incarnation. Which originally sounds much more concise, speedy and to the point. This time however we are treated to spacious, wild and jam like renditions of the four tracks. Which ends with the amazing twenty-two minutes long Supernatural Predator. Overwhelming, emotional waves of pure musical bliss. It is twenty-two minutes of excellent momentum and high energy, straight and direct from the great magnet. They did not just channel the spirt of Lemouchi, they channeled the spirits of all the music Gods. And this live is recording will rank among the top five of live recordings ever done and is meant for them… The fallen ones. The Gods of yore…

Stoner HiVe's Top 5 Artists listened to last week

Stoner HiVe's
Top 5 Artists listened to last week:

Activator (34)
Dealer (30)
Jegulja (28)
Carnaval (22)

Activator suddenly appeared on the radar again, thanks to fellow music fiends. Their 2004 released Both Barrels still holds firm after twelve years. Should we demand a reunion? The new Dealer album Billionaire Boys Club is definitely one hell of a grungy, punky all out assault on all the senses. So, buy a villa, a boat, a plane and the album and join the club! Jegulja, founded by a former member of Carnaval released it's first official album. Which goes to show that Slovenia is responsible for so much goodness. Cause together with his former band Carnaval they both have released one of the best albums to come out these past two months. So be sure to get groovy with Jegulja's Darkest Light and Carnaval's Miss Universe. The Marcus King Band brings forth the blues rock gold in pure form.Soul-influenced psychedelic southern rock and powered by high octane diesel! Thanks to yet another one of the lovely music fiends out there...

Only good stuff!

Heavy Traffic – Plastic Surgery

Heavy Traffic – Plastic Surgery
Twin Earth Records – 2016
Psychedelic Fuzz, Heavy Rock, Stoner
Rated: ****

Plastic Surgery was released at the tail end of 2016, just too late to feature on peoples end of year list - and make no mistake, it would have been a high contender. Heavy and dense, there is also a strong vein of psych-rock running through, ensuring that there is always something going on to keep your attention. The riffs are strong and muscular with snaking patterns that the guitars deliver drenched in feedback and distortion, giving the haunted vocals a platform to sit upon. Heavy Traffic have enough technical chops to stop this from being "just" another stoner doom release - in fact if you are after an album that satisfies your heavy, musical side ... give this a go. The tracks merge into a gigantic tidal wave of sound that incorporate doom, stoner and psychedelia from a demented band of mutants. Brain frying wah-wah riffs from the world of doom are slowly ground out in a mantra of trance inducing sections over which guitar freak-outs are played - this is meant to be played loud - you can almost smell the amps overloading under the weight of the songs. Feedback and a montage of powerful rhythms that remind me of being very drunk make sure that your senses are in permanent Fuzz overload with psychedelic heavy rock tunes that can melt speakers and brains, come on, you know you want it!

Stoner HiVe's Top 5 Artists listened to last week

Stoner HiVe's
Top 5 Artists listened to last week:

Gudger (22)
Lo-Pan (20)

Aah yes, the world will finally get to spin the debut effort Sunlight by Freedom Hawk on vinyl, soon to be release via Ripple Music. The acoustic John Garcia album The Coyote Who Spoke In Tongues is a break from his earlier work, but if you dug the final track Her Bullets Energy of his self-titled album, you will love this record as well! Read our little screed about that damn fine new record by Vermilion Whiskey on the blog. And a buddy of mine keeps raving on about Gudger, we get it. Their second album titled II is simply amazing! And the new Lo-Pan record In Tensions is just as awesome as well!

What a week!

Spacegoat – Superstition

Spacegoat – Superstition
Self Released – 2016
Stoner, Classic Rock, Doomish Psych
Rated: ****

Huge sounding and massive, Spacegoat play Classic Rock and Stoner with authority and power. Add some Proto- Doom and all is well on their new album Superstition. The riffs are as Sabbathy as you like without being too obvious which of course means they fucking rock like a mountain avalanche. Mid paced songs morph into slow hymns of despair but the melodic and fuzzed solos stop any signs of wrist slashing - instead you have the uncontrollable urge to start nodding and foot stomping. Even though there are hints of jamming in some tracks, the song structures keep everything pounding along. Acid psych elements swirl at the edge of things, giving hints of hidden mystery to the already impressive tapestry being woven. The band sound like they are playing live, there is an energy and urgency sometimes missing from this genre. You can almost feeling the members goading each other on to greater heights with an extra solo or a more impassioned vocal from Gina Rios who also is cranking out her bluesy axe riffs. This is impressive shit.

Vermilion Whiskey – Spirit of Tradition

Vermilion Whiskey – Spirit of Tradition
Self released – 2017
Rock, Hard, Southern, Stoner, Metal
Rated: ****

We still spin their 10 South album whenever that first spell of true summer weather comes around. Cause there is something truly southern and sweltering about that record. It took the guys from Vermilion Whiskey four years to deliver a follow-up. But holy hell, what a release! It’s called Spirit of Tradition and sports six hard working, hard rocking, hard trucking, southern infused, bourbon reeking tracks. Ooh yes, and they’ve also turned some of their ruckus into something heavily tainted with metal and a new age classic feel. Louisiana seems to have the best atmosphere to brew that fine American style pub rock music. It is soaked in that working man’s tradition. Those roots that go back to the blues and distill the soul for every righteous record. Though it also sports a lot of dynamic and a highly accomplished hard rock groove. The guitars ofcourse take center stage with tension building work, damn fine riffs and some tasty solos. But keep yer ear on those drums, as precise and choppy as you want them to be without becoming to overly focused on details, taking to the cymbals every time the emphasis needs to be on the whole. Crackerjack virtuoso! Hell, everything about this record is accomplished and you would not assume these cats would be hitting the rusty liquor that much. Well, apart from the one that always needs to sound like he spent a night too many in the gutter, the singer. Exactly hoarse enough, his voice definitely seems to exhume the alcohol of nights nobody seems to remember. But we are all damn sure it was a mighty fine time! And all in the Spirit of Tradition

Vinnum Sabbathi – Gravity Works

Vinnum Sabbathi – Gravity Works
Self Released – 2017
Instrumental, Drone, Doom, Stoner
Rated: *****

Vinnum Sabbathi have produced an ode to outer space – here is their manifesto: …“Gravity Works describes the relationship between gravity and human exploration, from the state of weightlessness experienced and recorded by astronauts and the historic achievements of Russian and American scientists during the Space Age to the ultimate collapse of the entire Universe described by Asimov in “The Collapsing Universe”… And now a confession – instrumental stoner/doom leaves me bored. With a few exceptions, it seems to consist of samey riffs, solos thrown in where the vocals should be and a feeling of ‘is that it?’. These Mexican cosmonauts have completely won me over with five tracks that flow and ebb completely in sync to their vision. This is not the cut n’ paste crap that fills me with horror. Compositions that have more in common with post-rock epics utilize huge sounding riffs and soundscapes. The samples used over the top of these crushing tunes are skillfully telling a story that works superbly. At all times, heavy and lumbering, this is no vision of a shiny utopia with gleaming spires and graceful ships flying through alien skies, rather the depths of space where black holes are imploding, rusting space freighters rot on abandoned asteroids and humans are just flesh trying to cope with the unstoppable force of gravity and deep space. This is the good stuff.

Buddha Sentenza – Semaphora

Buddha Sentenza – Semaphora
World In Sound – 2017
Rock, Instrumental, Psych, Jam, Prog, World
Rated: ****

The German World In Sound label has been releasing gem after gem the last few years. And the new Semaphora record by Buddha Sentenza continues that winning streak. Set to be released on vinyl at the end of January 2017, the cd version has been spinning regularly for the past months. The record takes us on journey of full instrumental discovery. It’s a deep dive into your own mind or a slow trek through the universe. With their fuzzy take on the progressive side of heaviness, their worldly and earthy influences take center stage on most of the tracks, the new album Semaphora distinctly weaves its very own pattern. Something with a classic feel and an almost seventies vibe, the entire album catches your imagination and makes you dream the good dream. The German quintet has no doubt released an album that requires your full attention. Cause if you put this on for background music, you will miss all the beauty it contains and it will just put you in a mellow and happy state. Hmm, there’s ofcourse nothing wrong with being mellow and happy…

Drive Like Maria – Creator, Preserver, Destroyer

Drive Like Maria – Creator, Preserver, Destroyer
Caronline/Zoo Studios/Goomah – 2017
Rock
Rated: ***

We’ve been digging the Dutch trio Drive Like Maria since their first release back in 2009 and we dug them even more with their self-titled release in 2013. But when they announced they would be releasing a three-part album in EP form; I did have a minor sceptic moment about that project. Not because I immediately doubted the quality of the music. But mostly because I reckoned these kind of releases are usually meant to gather more publicity and more, well, money. Cause after releasing the album in three parts, the record is usually released in full as well. With an extra song or two. Which just bleeds the fans dry. In my opinion. But hey, who cares about that. So, how about those three EP’s? Creaor, Preserver, Destroyer. Fine, good stuff, catchy rock songs and great hooks here and there. A bit more subdued and a bit more pleasant rock, instead of rock 'n roll. But was it worth it to release them separately? What’s even stranger, is the fact that the entire album was released before the third EP appeared? Why is that? Do you want people to buy the two EP’s and then the full album, so they have eight songs double and four songs only once? There isn’t an extra track on the full record, so that’s a good thing. Or is it? I don’t know. The songs are good, but the way it was released confuses and leads away from the music. Which can never be a good thing!

Lizzard Wizzard – Total War Power Bastard

Lizzard Wizzard – Total War Power Bastard
Self Released – 2017
Doom, Stoner, Psych, Sludge
Rated: *****

Lizzard Wizzard come from Australia and offer up some thicky, heavy sounds to give your neck tendons a workout! Surprisingly soulful vocals are hoarsely chanted deep down in the mix, emphasizing the weight of the music. This is doom/stoner given a swamp -ridden blues makeover which injects a bucketful of groove that is the force that moves these tracks along. Varied song compositions make sure the riffs come fast and slow and always with a nod to the distorted and heavy side of things. When the solos are dropped in, they have a great loose feel to them as if being jammed for the first time. The relentless riffs circle around structures that hold tension until released into head nodding explosions of groove, power and some fantastic lead work. This album comes fully formed, ready to kick you in the teeth, steal your money and spend it in a bar which has a killer jukebox and plenty of beer. This is the good stuff.

Blake from Canada

Blake from Canada

And I did not want to deprive you guys out there from one of the best lists/mails received in honor of the Top 20 Countdown of 2016. Here’s Blake’s!

Blake from Canada

Well here we go. Like you know, musical preferences, for those who care about music, are a deeply personal thing. I never judge a persons likes and dislikes because we're all different and what turns me on about a song might be the thing that turns someone else off. I'm not doing a perfectly ordered Top 20 but the records listed are records that I own or will own. The only time I spend money on a slab of vinyl is if the record turns me on from start to finish, so to me, all of these records are top notch.

1. KINGS OF FROG ISLAND (kofi) - IV
This record was recorded in 2013 but not released on a physical format until this year. So I think it should be a part of 2016's releases. Dammit, I'm not even gonna ask! It just is! And this is because for 3 years now this record has remained my favorite record of all time and I'm not sure it will ever be replaced. I'm not sure why this record clicks with me on the level it does but I love every second, every note, of this one. An absolute stunner!
2. THE COSMIC DEAD - RAINBOWHEAD
I see this record as perhaps their most accessible record to date but maybe that's just me...anyways, what a record! Acid rock freakouts have never sounded so good. Could listen to these few songs on repeat all day long.
3. COLOUR HAZE - LIVE VOL.1 EUROPA TOURNEE 2015
All recorded live here and there but a 2016 release so it counts! And any Colour Haze release is gonna end up high on my year end list no matter what. Probably the most underrated band that has ever existed. The kofi album IV, may be my single most favorite album but as far as bands go, these guys will always be numero uno...
4. HOTEL WRECKING CITY TRADERS - PHANTAMONIUM
This is another instrumental album that blows me away. The allure of this release never seems to fade no matter how often I take it for a spin.
5. KING BUFFALO - ORION
Probably one of the most widely appealing records on my list, this one took me by surprise. I wasn't immediately impressed by their name but after I listened to it, who the hell cares? Clean vocals and some really strong songwriting and melodies make this one a surprise favorite for me.
6. GOAT - REQUIEM
So far this bunch has not let me down. This record is kinda their "unplugged" album, if you will. Fewer psychedelic guitar freakouts, more acoustic, and I think the vocals are turned down a bit in the mix but there is something about them, whoever these guys are, that keeps me coming back and looking forward to more..
7. AHKMED - THE INLAND SEA
Not the continent you'd associate with the genre but more and more bands of their kind seem to be popping up these days. Loud in some parts, quiet in others, but always comes across with a strong mellow, laid back vibe. Two thumbs up!
8.SONORA - TONAL/NAGUAL LIVE AT JAM BAR 2016
Here's one from Russia. These guys don't even have a Discogs listing, nothing has been released on a physical format but I would purchase this one in a heartbeat. It really makes my day when I stumble across something like this. It feels like it my own special thing that maybe only myself and a few others have discovered.
9. KING GIZZARD AND THE LIZARD WIZARD - NONAGON INFINITY
Man, what do I say...I've not been a huge fan up until this point. Portions of the songs bleed into others and are rehashed a bit here and there but there is something about this record that is like heroin...it's sooo addictive!
10. LEE VAN CLEEF - HOLY SMOKE
This one has just been released so many people may have not yet given it a listen, but for a first release, wow....I mean like...wow. I live in Canada so it takes a while but the vinyl is ordered and until then...I wait.
11. ALBINO RHINO - UPHOLDER
12. MUGSTAR - MAGNETIC SEASONS
13. DUEL - FEARS OF THE DEAD
14. ELECTRIC EYE - DIFFERENT SUN
15. BLOWN OUT - NEW CRUISER
16. GIOBIA - MAGNIFIER
17. BLACK RAINBOWS - STELLAR PROPHECY
18. COSMIC FALL - FIRST FALL
19. 1000 MODS - REPEATED EXPOSURE TO...
20. MYTHIC SUNSHIP - OUROBOUROS
21. IT'S NOT NIGHT IT'S SPACE - OUR BIRTH IS BUT A SLEEP AND A FORGETTING
22. SEEDY JESUS WITH ISAIAH MITCHELL - TRANQUONAUTS
23. SALEMS BEND - ST
24. SWAN VALLEY HEIGHTS - ST
25. COMET CONTROL - CENTER OF THE MAZE

There...that's enough for now. I just love it when people say that rock is dead. It's alive and thriving, you just wouldn't know it by the radio or the Billboard 100. The best part of the changes occurring with regards to the music industry and downloading, blablabla...is that artists can avoid big record labels, and with the internet, do it all themselves which means 100% creative control. Records are being made exactly as the artist wished to. There are too many records being made to possibly buy and I listen to a lot online and download and listen in my car, I admit it. But when I come across an album I love, I make the purchase. When they tour close by, I buy a ticket. I'm 45 and the last 10 years or so have been the most exciting period for music in my life and I don't see it changing much...lucky for all of us...

Thanks for listening...
B Thibeau

Number 1

Number 1

There can be only one. A 1000Mods stood firm on Second Place. But to reach our Gold Medalist, the Numero Uno, the one true legendary album of 2016, we almost have to double the amount of points of the 1000Mods album Repeated Exposure To… Incredible! And something I had not expected. Not because of some form of doubt about this album or this band. Cause they were ofcourse also present on the Countdown before, on Number 9 back in 2014 and Number 14 in 2012. But because there were so many great albums released this year. I reckoned the field would have been much closer together. I, have to say, to some shame perhaps, that I had not recognized the status and amazing beauty of this album. In former years I knew, as everyone probably did, that Elder would win. Or Wo Fat or even Electric Wizard. But while I kept listening to this album over and over and enjoying every freaking riff and moment of it. I had not recognized it’s true quality. I do now. And it will continue to be pure energy for me from this moment on. Righteous fuel. And I need fuel. I am a serious consumer. And I am a firm believer, that on some nights, when the moon is full, and the animals are on the prowl, a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles with the right kind of music very loud on the radio… And yes, this album will make it run even faster and even further…
