Drenge – Undertow

Drenge – Undertow
Mad Mark/Infectious – 2015
Rock, Grunge, Alternative, Garage, Stoner
Rated: ****

On their self-titled debut record Drenge was comprised out of the two Loveless brothers but for the sophomore release Undertow they implored the help of bass player Rob Graham. Which immediately steers the sound away from the garage they were labelled as towards a much fuller, warmer and groovier avenue. But that is not all that has changed, for the bleak nature we knew from them has now turned into something warmer, darker and even menacing. They retained their raw edge but started digging around the postpunk, grunge and old seventies era punk and comprised it all into tight and compact rock songs that make you move or move you whether you want to or not. And then there are those songs where they found room to use that freight train cadence that you always hope will never end. It’s rather spooky and almost scary how this music drags you along and has you imagining bopping along an endless watery surface with all kinds of instruments floating around. Could this also be the influence of Ross Orton who co-produced the Arctic Monkeys AM record? Cause there is definitely some AM action going on as well as some influences that definitely reek of Queens of The Stone Age and Kyuss. Perhaps these boys need to visit the Rancho and the Desert as well…
