Hair of The Dog – Hair of The Dog

Hair of The Dog – Hair of The Dog
Bilocation Records/Kozmik Artifactz – 2014
Rock, Hard, Seventies, Stoner, Blues
Rated: ****

It’s always weird when a band chooses the same name as many other outfits have chosen; some of which even released over ten albums as of 1993. But we gladly forgive Scottish power trio Hair of The Dog for this error on their part since they can do little wrong when one gets swept away by the tunes on their self-titled debut. Filled with classic hard rock and seventies blues with a tiny but marauding stoner drive behind it, the seven tracks on this record hit the sweet spot right exactly smack dab in the middle. Their Deep Purple, Cream, Sabbath and ofcourse Nazareth feel is offset by something windswept, cold and dusty and reminds of Graveyard’s Hisingen Blues during certain moments and Witchcraft or Lonely Kamel the next. But they stay much more hard rock and never really turn into something Scandinavian; although it might be the Viking ancestry that secretly courses through all of their veins that binds them. The most impressive part is perhaps their ability to let all of the individuals take their shiny moments; and have the bass be the propeller; or the drums be the charger and the guitar the electrifier. I guess the seventies rock riffs are back and with a vengeance!
